A Worker’s View
This was the view that the workers at the Maenofferen Slate Quarry at Blaenau Ffestiniog saw every day as they walked wearily home after work.

Forgotten
Slate cutting equipment at Maenofferen Slate Mill in Blaenau Ffestiniog. I like this photo as it almost looks like the workers have just left for the day and will return tomorrow. Sadly, the workers all left in 1998 when the Quarry closed permanently.

Deserted
The vast Dressing Sheds at Maenofferen Slate Quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog once echoed to the sounds of hundreds of men preparing slates for export all around the world, but now only the ghosts of those workers remain. The Quarry has been disused since closure in 1998.

A Place Of Work

Maenofferen
Looking down towards Blaenau Ffestiniog from the Maenofferen Slate Quarry. Full scale slate quarrying ceased here in 1997, leaving the Quarry buildings abandoned and intact. A full Photo Tour can be found on the Flickr website here.

Passing Of An Era…
I recently paid a visit to the disused Maenofferen Slate Quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog with fellow photographer Jason Edwards. We found these massive sheds that were still full of slate cutting and trimming machinery, old railway engines, wagons, tools – all just left when it closed back in 1997. As I wandered around, I found it sad that this way of life that had for so long provided valuable employment for so many local people had just ceased to be. A full Photo Tour can be found on my Flickr website here.
