Metropole Hotel

Metropole Hotel Colwyn Bay-2400

This ornate Porch with the Metropole name is stained glass is a reminder that the building was once one of Colwyn Bay’s grandest hotels – The Metropole Hotel – originally built in 1891 and a place where chauffeurs queued up outside to collect their rich lady employers after lunch even as late as the 1950s. By the 1980s, the building was practically unused apart from a rather dingy nightclub called Flight Level Zero. It was renovated into retirement apartments in 1991.

Market Forces

Final Days of the Indoor Market

Colwyn Bay Indoor Market - Aug 2009-2038

Frontage of the former Indoor Market in Colwyn Bay, photographed in August 2009. Abandoned after a fire in the late 1980s, it has remained derelict ever since. I remember going round it several times as a kid, there must only have been about 20 market stalls, plus a central cafe. The whole building was demolished in 2013, leaving just a vacant site.

Apocalypse Eirias

Storm clouds gather over the Boating Lake in Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay, giving the photo an ‘end of the world’ feel. Photo taken in August 2009.
